Moral dan Morale

Moral (noun) berarti pelajaran yang bisa kita pelajari dari sebuah cerita laboratorium bahasa

Morals (dengan tambahan -s/jamak) memiliki arti yang berbeda, dalam bahasa Indonesia mungkin lebih kita kenal dengan etika pekerjaan.

Contoh:

  • The doctor refused to perform an abortion because it was against her morals.
  • He has no morals whatsoever – he’ll do anything and everything to get rich.

Moral (kata sifat) juga berarti moral dalam bahasa Indonesia laboratorium bahasa

Contoh:

  • If you know that a child is being abused, you have a moral obligation to inform the police.
  • It is often used with moral obligation/responsibility/duty

Sementara morale tidak ada hubungannya dengan moral. Bahkan cara membacanya pun sedikit berbeda

  • moral: MOR – al
  • morale: mor – ALE

Morale berarti semangat atau emosi dari sekelompok orang lab bahasa

Contoh:

  • If a sports team has high morale, it means the members of the team are feeling good and optimistic.
  • If morale is low among employees of a company, it means the employees are feeling negative and not motivated.

Discrete dan Discreet

Discrete berarti terpisah atau berlainan:

Contoh:

  • The two companies have a partnership, but they are discrete entities.
  • We offer three discrete service plans: internet only, internet + cell phone, and internet + cell phone + TV.

Discreet berarti bijaksana atau berhati-hati:

  • The photographer at the funeral remained discreet and respectful.
  • She discreetly adjusted her bra strap, which was falling down her shoulder.

Appraise dan Apprise

Appraise merupakan kata kerja, sementara kata bendanya adalah appraisal

Appraise berarti mengevaluasi, menilai, atau menaksir lab bahasa

Contoh:

  • The teachers will appraise the students’ presentations.
  • A car dealership appraises the value of used cars.
  • Managers often appraise their employees once per year.

Appraisal berarti penilaian:

Contoh:

  • Please give me your honest appraisal of the book I’ve written.
  • We need to conduct a thorough appraisal of the property before buying it.

Apprise berarti memberi tahu atau menginformasikan lab bahasa

Contoh:

  • The President has been apprised of the latest developments in the crisis.
  • The students were apprised of the increase in tuition.
  • Please keep me apprised of this situation.
    keep me appraised

Principal dan Principle

Principal memiliki tiga arti sebagai kata sifat, kata benda, dan kata benda yang berhubungan dengan keuangan

1.     Sebagai kata sifat: utama atau paling penting

  • The lake is the principal water source for the city.

2.     Sebagai kata benda: kepala sekolah

  • Students who misbehave are sent to the principal’s office.

3.     Sebagai kata benda (keuangan): jumlah hutang awal (tanpa bunga):

Principle berarti prinsip atau dasar-dasar:

  • My daughter is learning the basic principles of physics in her science class.
  • Power in the hands of the people is one of the key principles of democracy.
  • He would never steal from the company – he’s a man of high principles.

Altar dan Alter

Altar merupakan tempat pemujaan (kata benda), dalam bahasa Indonesia, kata ini juga sering digunakan

Sedangkan alter merupakan sinonim dari change atau mengubah. Alter biasanya digunakan dalam situasi formal

Contoh:

  • Art has the potential to alter our perception of the world.
  • These vegetables have been genetically altered to be richer in vitamins.
  • You can re-publish the article in its original form; it may not be altered.

Untuk kata benda dari alter (yang merupakan kata kerja) adalah alteration

Contoh:

  • I made a few alterations to the project proposal.
    = I made a few changes to the project proposal.
  • May I suggest one alteration to the schedule for the conference?
    = May I suggest one change to the schedule for the conference?

Compliment dan Complement

Compliment berarti memuji atau pujian (bisa berupa kata kerja atau kata benda)

Contoh:

  • He complimented me on my web design skills.
  • He paid me a compliment on my web design skills.

Jangan tertukar dengan complimentary. Kata tersebut berarti gratis lab bahasa

Contoh:

  • At this hotel, breakfast is complimentary.
  • You get a complimentary cookie when you order coffee at that café.

Complement berarti saling melengkapi satu sama lain (juga bisa berupa kata kerja maupun kata benda) lab bahasa

Contoh:

  • That necklace is the perfect complement to your outfit.
    (complement = noun)
  • My business partner and I really complement each other. We make a good team.
    (complement = verb)
